1983: Martin Luther King Jr. Day Becomes a National Holiday

Two worlds collided when Elizabeth was brought into this world on January 15, 1979, also known as the same day Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in 1929. Once assassinated in 1968, there was an effort to create an official federal holiday to commemorate his accomplishments. The effort to create this holiday started in 1979, coinciding with Elizabeth’s birth, but it was not signed into law until 1983, and even then it was not officially celebrated until 1986.
