The Color Purple, by Alice Walker, focuses on female black life during the 1930s in the south. Rather than describe the plot here (because, lets face it, it would totally bum you out), we'll just let you know that it won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The Color Purple is an Oprah Book Club Book, has been adapted into a film (with Whoopie Goldberg & Oprah) and a musical not starring Fantasia.
